Leadership & Team Building
Staff Development
The Hoofbeat newspaper staff this year posed a unique challenge. Out of 15 members, ten of had no prior journalistic experience. A large part of my role as a leader was guiding new staff members through reporting, designing, and writing. Along with our adviser, my Co-Editor-in-Chief and I conducted mini lessons at the beginning of the year that covered the basics of journalism—brainstorming, interviewing, different styles of writing, how to use the shared drive, collecting information for graphics, etc.
However, a leadership role is never unidirectional. Each staff member brings unique ideas, skills, and knowledge to the team. I learn something new from my staff on a daily basis. One member has her own documentary channel on Youtube, another runs a blog in search of a deeper truth, and another co-hosts a radio show with his dad. It is precisely the diversity in thought, experience, and passion on our staff that allows us to grow from one another. Our team is a collaborative force built upon discussion, disagreement, and a shared desire to create waves through the public. |

Community Leadership
I am the Student Representative from Millard North High School on the Millard Public Schools (MPS) Board of Education in Omaha, Nebraska. The MPS Board works to maximize student achievement in its school district. As one of the few young people on the Board, district officials often turn to me for updates about student life within the high schools. I was also appointed as the Senior Representative on the Millard North Student Improvement Team. This position allows me to collaborate with administrators, teachers, and community leaders to address civic issues and initiate school advancements. As a student representative in both offices, I act as a voice for the student body on various social, academic, and extracurricular issues. I often communicate with several demographics of students in order to understand and delineate their perspectives to community leaders and public officials. Both the MPS Board and the MN Student Improvement Team are excellent forums for me to stay updated with the latest news in our community. I am always on the lookout for new stories.
